So apparently, there is an app that notifies Twitter users if they have tweeted something that could get them fired. The app was created to track certain negative phrases about jobs or bosses and will warn the twitter user that this could result in him being fired. Out of all the people who have this app and were notified, only about 5% of these people actually deleted their tweets. Do you think this is useful or do you think people should get what they deserve if they are dumb enough to post something rude on Twitter? Do you think this app would be useful? Let me know!

The fact that an app like this needs to exist is just unfortunate and goes to show that many people don’t have any concept of common sense. An easy rule of thumb would be not to tweet something about your boss or job that you wouldn’t say to his or her face or in the office environment. But, nooo. As a society, we’d rather ask for forgiveness than permission. We’d rather be overprotected by apps, such as this, than to think on our own about whether a tweet may cross the line. Even more problematic: how will people ever learn to censor themselves in reality if it’s regularly done for them in the virtual space?
ReplyDeleteI think this app is a great idea! A lot of people don't think before they post or tweet, and I could see a real benefit for them to use this app. However, it is pretty sad when we need an app like this because we don't take a second to think about how our posts can affect different aspects of our lives. As someone who is involved with social media marketing, I know there are certain things that I can and cannot post on my personal accounts. However, as I said before, a lot of people don't think twice before sending out a tweet about how awful their boss is or maybe even release some confidential information about the company when they thought they were just ranting. I could really see the benefit of an app like this, the question is, are the people who really need it smart enough to use it?
